  1. Take 1 cup Basmati Rice
  2. Make ready 1/4 kg Fresh Green Peas
  3. Take 2 tbsp Ghee/Oil
  4. Prepare 1 Onion (Finely Chopped)
  5. Take 1 Green Chilli (Finely Chopped)
  6. Take 1 Tomato (Finely Chopped)
  7. Prepare 1 Sprig Curry Leaves
  8. Make ready 1 cup Coriander Leaves (Finely Chopped)
  9. Prepare 1 tsp Ginger Paste
  10. Make ready 1 tsp Garlic Paste
  11. Prepare 1 Chicken Soup Cube
  12. Take 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  13. Take 1 tsp Chilli Powder
  14. Take 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  15. Prepare 1 tsp Garam Masala
  16. Prepare 1/2 tsp Pepper Powder
  17. Make ready 1/2 tsp Cumin Powder
  18. Make ready 1/4 tsp Cumin Seeds
  19. Take Pinch Asafoetida
  20. Prepare to taste Salt
  21. Prepare 2 cups Hot Water

Made using fresh green peas, long grain rice, and a few spices, you can have it with any Indian curry or lentils. Peas pulao or matar pulao is a popular dish which was made especially during winter months in northern parts of India. We would also call it matar wale chawal (matar=green peas). We used to get fresh green peas only during winters and this pulao and matar paratha were two of my favorite things around that time.

Steps to make Pea Pulao:
  1. Wash basmati rice nicely. Soak in water for 15 minutes. Keep aside. Wash green peas and keep aside.
  2. Heat ghee/oil in a kadai. When hot, add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Add chopped green chilli and curry leaves. Add onions and saute till they are golden brown. Add little coriander leaves and saute for a minute because it gives a good flavour to the pulao.
  3. Add ginger and garlic paste and saute till the raw smell goes.
  4. Add tomatoes and salt and cook till the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
  5. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala, pepper powder and cumin powder and saute for a minute.
  6. Add green peas and little hot water and cover and cook till the peas are cooked.
  7. Add rice and coriander leaves and saute till the masala is coated to the rice.
  8. Add hot water and soup cube. Let it come to a boil. When it starts boiling, turn the flame to low and cover and cook for 10 to 12 minutes or till done. Keep covered for 5 to 10 minutes. Open the lid and give it a good mix. Serve hot with Pickle, Curd, Raita, Salad etc.

We would also call it matar wale chawal (matar=green peas). We used to get fresh green peas only during winters and this pulao and matar paratha were two of my favorite things around that time. Peas pulao or matar pulao is white basmati rice cooked with sweet garden peas, ginger and whole spices. Matar is an Indian term for green peas. So Matar Rice or Pulao translates loosely to 'Rice flavored with Peas'.
