Unnakkaya is delicious, sweet and traditional Kerala snack prepared mainly in the Northern Kerala (in Malabar, Kannur, Thalassery etc) during the Ramzan days. Its very popular in other parts of Kerala also during the Ramadan (Ramazan) fasting time. It is prepared by filling smashed bananas stuffed with cashew nuts, raisins and rice flakes. Unnakaya recipe, Unnakai (also called Unnakaya, Kai Ada, Unnakka, and Kai Porichathu) is a spindle-shaped sweet dessert made of steamed and mashed plantain and stuffed🥥.

The ingredients needed to make Unnakaya:
  1. Get 2 plantain (medium ripe)
  2. Take 1/4 cup coconut grated
  3. Make ready 1 tbsp cashew nut
  4. Get 8 raisin
  5. Take 5 tbsps sugar
  6. Get 1 tbsp ghee
  7. Prepare 1 tsp cardamom powdered
  8. Get coconut oil

So, yes this is for the health conscious people. Method: Cut the banana in half. Now let the banana cool a bit, peel off the skin and mash it well. Divide it into equal portion and set aside.

Steps to make Unnakaya:
  1. Steam cook bananas on medium flame till soft.Remove the outer skin and cut into halves.Discard the inner black seeds.Mash well using a wooden spoon without lumps. The consistency should be thick.If it is sticky add little rice flour to it and mix well to get a thick dough like consistency. Keep aside.Heat ghee in a pan.Add cashew,raiisns,grated coconut and sugar to it.let it saute on low flame.Add cardamom powder to it.Remove from fire and allow t to cool.
  2. Divide the banana mix into evenly sized lemon balls. Rub oil on your palms.Take one ball in your left hand and flatten it by pressing using other hand to form a circle shape.
  3. Place 1 tbsp. of coconut filling in the center and  seal it properly by bringing all the sides.
  4. Shape into cylindrical or oval shape(like unakka which means cotton pod)
  5. Heat oil in a kadai.Deep fry till golden brown in color.

I remember Ramadan when I am writing about Unnakkaya which is a light healthy sweet dish very common in Malabar (south indian state Kerala) during Ramadan for Iftar.
